James H. Maratta, the second child of Mathew Maratta, was born 13 Jan 1801 , in Allegheny Co., PA, and died 26 April 1870 in Springfield , Washington Co. , KY. James H. Maratta was first recorded in the 1810 census of Nelson Co.,KY in the household of Mathew Maratta as one of the males under ten years of age. He is possibly next recorded in the 1820 census of Montgomery Co., KY in the household of John Marity, as the male aged between 16 and 19. James H. Maratta is first named on the tax rolls of Nelson Co., KY in 1822 and is listed next to his uncle Sylvester and grandfather James Maratta, suggesting he was working on Sylvester's farm at that time. Sometime before 1830, he added a "y" to his name and there after signed his name as James H. Marattay. In 1830 he was married, had three small children and was the owner of a small acreage in Spencer Co., KY. James H. Marattay appeared on the tax rolls of Washington Co., KY in 1837 and in 1846 he is found in the partnership of "Marattay and Fox" which was taxed for several horses, eight acres of land and one lot all located in downtown Springfield , KY. In 1849, James was the sole owner of the business which is identified as a Wool Carding Mill by the marriage announcement in Springfield , KY , of Jack Smith to Delphen Molohan in 1845 which states that "Mr. Smith works for Mr. Marattay, operating a wool carding machine. The mill was located downtown next to the hotel and employed as many as 20 men. In the Washington Co., KY censuses of 1850 and 1860 James' occupation was listed as a "Wool Carder". The mill was closed during the Civil War, and by 1870 had been converted to a livery stable. James H. Marattay was a well respected member of the community and in 1845 he was ordained as a Deacon of the Bethlehem Baptist Church and was re-elected to the position again in 1855. His name is found on many documents as a witness or as a bride's bondsman. He was appointed several times to inventory the estate of the deceased or named as the executor of wills. James H. Marattay is buried in what appears to be a family plot on Cemetery Hill in Springfield KY , however, only one other unreadable stone is there to keep him company.
